Tax Reporting

What Is Form 7205?

Form 7205 reports the claim; the underlying file must explain why its numbers belong there.

Last reviewed: September 17, 2026

Section 179D | Form 7205 | Filing Support

Form 7205 organizes building, calculation, certifier, and designer-allocation information for the applicable return. It does not create technical certification, cure missing evidence, or function as an amended income-tax return by itself.

Start with the claimant: a taxable building owner or an eligible designer receiving a valid allocation follows a different factual path into the form.

Part I

Tell one consistent building story

Building identity, address, dates, area, savings, route, and relevant boxes should agree with ownership records, the model, certification, and project file.

Construction start and placed in service answer different questions. Preserve both rather than forcing one project date into every field.

Part IV

Simplified editorial guide; consult the current form and instructions.

Part II

Reconcile the preliminary amount to costs and prior deductions

For an illustrative 2026 owner claim, 100,000 square feet and 40% certified savings yield a $0.89 base rate and $89,000 preliminary amount, assuming sufficient cost and no prior deductions.

The December 2025 instructions include a worksheet with 2025 constants while also listing 2026 amounts. For a 2026 example, use Rev. Proc. 2025-32 and have the preparer reconcile the current filing instructions rather than silently carrying forward 2025 constants.

Part III

Identify the applicable certification role

The ordinary route includes field inspection after placement in service and an unrelated, appropriately licensed engineer or contractor with written qualifications under the cited guidance.

Do not substitute designer status or the alternative retrofit route’s professional definition for the applicable certifier analysis.

Pre-filing reconciliation

Form inputs should agree with source records.

Part IV

A designer ties the form to a signed owner allocation

The allocation file should contain owner and designer contacts, building address, property cost, placed-in-service date, allocated amount, authorized signatures, and the owner declaration described in the cited guidance, read with expanded current law.

Reconcile multiple allocations to one building-wide schedule before reporting an amount.

Filing path

Attach the form to the appropriate return procedure

Form 7205 accompanies the applicable return. Whether a taxpayer files an original return, amended return, or another available procedure is a separate tax determination.

A project date does not prove a prior year remains open. Refund limitations and entity-specific procedures require preparer review.

Companion reporting

Review Form 7220 for an increased amount

Current instructions use Form 7220 for PWA information associated with increased amounts, subject to applicable exceptions and instructions.

Complete a final source-to-form tie-out so every material number points to a dated record, model, certification, allocation, or preparer workpaper.

Form 7205 is part of—not a substitute for—the filing path

Tax procedure remains a preparer conclusion.

Common questions

Practical answers before the review

No. It accompanies the applicable return or filing procedure determined by the preparer.

What does a designer report in Part IV?

Designer-allocation information that should reconcile to the signed owner document and building-wide schedule.

Does an increased claim require additional reporting?

Review current Form 7220 requirements and any applicable exception with the preparer.
